Scrubbers also known as Wet type collectors are available in different designs. They have the ability to handle high temperature and moisture- laden gases. The collection of dust in a wetted form eliminates a secondary dust problem in disposal of collected material.
Chamber or Spray Tower- Chamber or spray tower collectors consist of a round or rectangular chamber into which water is introduced via spray nozzles. There are many variations of design but the principal mechanism is impaction of dust particles on the liquid droplets created by the nozzles. These droplets are separated from the air stream by centrifugal force or impingement on water eliminators.
Pressure drop is relatively low, on the order of ½” WG, but water pressure range from 10 to 100 psi. In general this type of collector low-pressure supply water and operates in the lower efficiency range of wet collectors. Where water is supplied under high pressure, as with fog towers, collection efficiency reaches the upper range of wet collectors.
For conventional equipment, water requirements are reasonable with a maximum of about 5 gpm per 1000 ICFM of gas. Fogging types using high water pressure may require as much as 10 gpm per 1000 SCFM of gas.
